The Purpose Of Medicine And The New Genetics.
This paper discusses the new developments in clinical genetics against the background of a consideration of the purpose of medicine as understood by reference to the Christian and Hippocratic tradition. And the main principles of this tradition are the principle of the sanctity of human life from the time it begins and the principle that the doctor must never harm the individual patient.
It is argued in order to be compatible with Hippocratic andc hristian values, clinical genetics must never allow the interest of the individual paatient to be sacrificed for the good of other people, the state or anything else. This applies to predictive testing, carrier testing as well as prenatal testing and also to gene therapy and other forms of genetic alterations.
L'articolo discute i nuovi sviluppi della genetica clinica criticando certe concezioni degli scopi della medicina, avvalendosi del riferimento alla tradizione cristiana ed ippocratica. E i principi fondamentali di tali tradizioni sono il principio della santità della vita dal momento del suo inizio e il principio secondo il quale il mediconon deve mai apportare danno al singolo paziente.
L'autore argomenta inoltre che per essere in linea con i valori proposti dalle tradizione ippocratica e cristiana, la genetica clinica non deve mai consentire che il miglior interesse del paziente venga sacrificato per il bene di altri pazienti, per lo Stato o per qualsiasi altro motivo. Cị vale per i test genetici predittivi, per i "carrier testing", come anche per la diagnosi prenatale ed anche la terapia genica ed altre forme di modificazioni genetiche.
